Osamah Almarwai relishes ‘big opportunity’ to showcase skills against Mikey Musumeci

Osamah Almarwai is very excited about the opportunity to compete against ONE flyweight submission grappling world champion Mikey Musumeci.

Almarwai will make his ONE Championship debut on what is sure to be one of the biggest nights in promotional history. ONE will make its long-awaited U.S. debut on May 5. Emanating from the 1stBank Center in Colorado, ONE Fight Night 10 on Prime Video will feature three epic ONE world championship matchups, including the ONE flyweight submission grappling world title showdown between Almarwai and Musumeci.

“It’s really an honor to compete against him,” Almarwai said in an interview with the promotion. “This is a very big opportunity to showcase my skills, and I’m very, very, very excited, man.”

It may be Osamah Almarwai’s first appearance inside the circle, but make no mistake, ‘Osa’ is a highly decorated submission specialist. He holds the distinction of being the first black belt IBJJF World No-Gi champion from Yemen and is currently ranked No. 1 in the 2022-2023 IBJJF No-Gi Rooster division.

As good as Almarwai is, we mustn’t forget that he will be taking on perhaps the best BJJ practitioner in the world today. Mikey Musumeci, a four-time IBJJF world champion, has looked nothing short of spectacular in his ONE Championship appearances, earning decisive wins over Masakazu Imanari, Cleber Sousa, and Gantumur Bayanduuren.

After competing against Sambo world champion Gantumur Bayanduuren at ONE Fight Night 6 in January, Mikey Musumeci is looking forward to the chance to compete against another jiu-jitsu-focused opponent in Osamah Almarwai.

"I feel like this match is so much more fun for me – that I can just focus on exciting jiu-jitsu,” Musumeci told the Jiu-Jitsu Times. “I don’t have to worry about that anti-jiu-jitsu style. I can just have fun. My favorite thing in the world is just doing jiu-jitsu."

"That anti-jiu-jitsu style, where I have to chase people around, that’s not fun at all. But now I can have fun, and figure out new, cool things that I want to hit, and keep improving as a jiu-jitsu athlete."

Training at Atos Jiu-Jitsu Academy in San Diego, Osamah Almarwai trained and honed his skills alongside some of the best grapplers in the world, including Brazilian legend Andre Galvao and popular submission grappling duo Tye and Kade Ruotolo. Needless to say, if Mikey Musumeci wants a challenge, he will get exactly that on May 5.
