Oscar De La Hoya recently sounded off on Canelo Alvarez for insisting on fighting Floyd Mayweather before he believed he was ready for the challenge. The boxing legend-turned-promoter noted that the gap between their respective skill levels was very noticeable at the time.

The 51-year-old's Golden Boy Promotions promoted the Mexican boxing star, who had a 42-0-1 record at the time that included 30 knockouts. The bout took place on Sept.14, 2013, and saw the 36-year-old Mayweather show that he hadn't lost a step as he put on a masterclass performance against the 23-year-old phenom en route to a majority decision win.

During his appearance on Club Shay Shay, 'The Golden Boy' claimed that he attempted to convince the Mexican against accepting the fight because he didn't believe he was 'Money's' level yet. De La Hoya sounded off on Alvarez's mentality and mentioned that he didn't stand a chance against Mayweather. He said:

"I told Canelo [Alvarez], 'do not fight Floyd [Mayweather] because you're too young, you have no experience'...[Alvarez was] flexing his muscles like, 'I can take on Floyd, I'm the very best'. Guess what? You got schooled...It wasn't even close."

Oscar De La Hoya credits Floyd Mayweather for helping Golden Promotions achieve success

Oscar De La Hoya made a name for himself during his legendary boxing career, but he has also succeeded as a promoter and credited Floyd Mayweather helping Golden Boy Promotions.

During the aforementioned appearance, De La Hoya mentioned that Mayweather's lucrative bout agreements while being a Golden Boy Promotions fighter assisted them in being among the top promoters in boxing. He said:

"I did promote Floyd [Mayweather], yeah. The time when he was making the Showtime contract $30-40 million, yeah, we promoted all those fights. Great experience for us. It put us on the map obviously and you know, we're now one of the top promoters in the world."
