Umar Nurmagomedov shared an update about the hand injury sustained during his UFC 311 title fight against Bantamweight champion Merab Dvalishvili. After a competitive start, Nurmagomedov could not keep up with Dvalishvili's furious pace in the championship rounds and lost the bout by unanimous decision (48-47 X 2, 49-46).

In the octagon interview, the 27-year-old revealed that he sustained a hand injury during the first round of the fight, which severely limited his punching ability.

Nurmagomedov recently underwent surgery to fix the injury and shared an X-ray image of his hand on his Instagram story. The short caption to the post read:

"Alhamdulillah [Praise be to God]"

Based on the visual observation of the X-ray image, it appears that the Dagestani fighter fractured the first metacarpal in his left hand and got an intramedullary headless screw fixation. The technique enables the fixation of fractures without needing external prominent hardware.

Similar to Nurmagomedov, Dvalishvili suffered severe injuries in the UFC 311 fight camp. In the post-fight press conference, the champion revealed that a serious back injury prevented him from training in wrestling for several days during the short training camp.

Additionally, he suffered a cut on his shin while using the stair stepper during the training camp, which required 27 stitches. Dvalishvili said the shin injury healed only during the UFC 311 fight week.

Coach says he would have changed the game plan if Umar Nurmagomedov informed about his injury during the fight - "What the hell"

In a recent interview with Submission Radio, Umar Nurmagomedov's coach Javier Mendez revealed that the Dagestani fighter did not reveal the injury to him or Khabib Nurmagomedv during the UFC 311 fight against Merab Dvalishvili.

As a part of the strategy to conserve energy, Mendez wanted Nurmagomedov to avoid attempting takedowns and focus on striking. However, the 27-year-old's repeated takedown attempts surprised him in the corner.

"I was, like, 'What the hell?' So now, I realized why he tried to take [Dvalishvili] down - Because he broke his freakin' hand!"

He added:

"So I told him after the first round, 'No more takedowns.' I whispered in his ear, 'No more takedowns, don't do it.' If he had told me he broke his hand, I would have changed the game plan. Khabib and I would have changed the game plan completely around."

Mendez reinforced that Umar never told him or Khabib about the hand injury during the fight, leading them to stick to the original game plan, which diminished his chances of winning the belt. Mendez added that he did not question Umar about the issue post-fight as the Dagestani fighter was heartbroken with the loss and the coach did not want to scrutinize his decision in that situation.
