In his last fight, ‘The Reaper’ suffered a devastating loss to undefeated phenom Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 308.
Chimaev dominated Whittaker in the first round, finishing him with a face crank that left his teeth misaligned. The victory earned Chimaev a Performance of the Night bonus.
Robert Whittaker reflects on loss to Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 308
Robert Whittaker vs. Khamzat Chimaev was originally scheduled for a UFC Fight Night event in Saudi Arabia this past June. However, Chimaev pulled out of the bout due to health issues.
Ikram Aliskerov stepped in as a replacement, and Whittaker delivered an amazing performance, knocking the Russian out in the first round. Whittaker later faced Chimaev at UFC 308, where he suffered a quick loss.
Speaking on the MMArcade podcast, the former middleweight champion reflected on his setback, stating that he trained a lot of wrestling for his fight with Chimaev but still fell short. He praised ‘Borz', saying:
“I felt real comfortable standing with him [Chimaev]. Then, the dude drops like a millimeter — how do you stop that takedown? We did a lot of wrestling, we did a lot of wall work, but it’s so hard to replicate that sort of takedown, that sort of commitment.
“Props to him. Guy knows his strength and played into them to a tee, and was willing to burn it all there for it.”
