During the last few years of his career, Sage Northcutt found himself with a lot of time on his hands to pick up some new hobbies and interests while putting in working on his return to competition.
After suffering substantial injuries on his debut loss in ONE Championship back in 2019, Northcutt was forced to sit on the sidelines for a lengthy surgery and recovery process.
At one point questioning whether he would ever be able to compete again, Northcutt’s return was further delayed by COVID-19 that totaled his absent period to four years.
In Broomfield, Colorado, for ONE Fight Night 10, Northcutt’s wait finally ended. And it couldn’t have gone any better. That evening inside the sold-out 1stBank Center, the American superstar submitted Ahmed Mujtaba with a sublime heel hook submission in 39 seconds of the first round.

On top of keeping himself active and in shape where possible, Sage has clearly been working on his overall skill set ahead of his return. But that’s not all.
In an appearance on the Fistivities podcast with Karyn Bryant & Renato Laranja, ‘Super’ Sage Northcutt spoke about how else he used his time during his inactive period:
“I was doing some fun stuff, I got into gaming, I got into watching anime. My brother’s like ‘You’ve got to start watching anime’ and he gave me all these animes to watch. They’re cool. I never really watched anime before, but when all that stuff happened, that’s when I really got into it. and I had time.”
