Sandy Ryan will defend her WBO welterweight world title against Mikaela Mayer of the United States on September 27 at the Madison Square Garden Theater in New York.
If successful, this will mark Ryan's sixth title defense after winning the vacant WBC international super lightweight belt in August 2022 and the vacant WBO world welterweight strap against Marie Pier Houle in April 2023. Since then, the British boxer has unified the WBO, WBC, and IBO world welterweight championships through successful defenses, with the last one coming against Terri Harper in March 2024, where Harper refused to continue the fight after the first round.
Mayer has had her share of success in the ring, winning and defending super featherweight titles under multiple sanctioning bodies. As an amateur, the American was successful in her campaign to capture the Bronze at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Her last attempt to dethrone a Brit proved unsuccessful. In January 2024, she went toe-to-toe against Natasha Jones for the 147-pound strap but came up short. She is now determined to pry the belt off her next foe, Ryan.
