Tyron Woodley has sparked controversy by sharing an unflattering sparring story about Colby Covington following the latter’s recent defeat at UFC Tampa. The tale centered on their time as training partners at American Top Team (ATT).
In an interview with Ariel Helwani, Woodley claimed Covington’s departure from ATT stemmed from his inability to keep up during training. He recounted a heated exchange where he warned Covington about his behavior, saying:
“I tell Colby the last day that he trained with me… I said, ‘Colby you a d**k.’ And I said today, if you act like you’d get out of armbar or if you don’t submit to a choke or if you get mad that I took you down and have an attitude and I’m a f**king two-time All-American Hall of Fame wrestler like I’m not supposed to take you down if you run from me, I’m going to break your f**king arm today."

"I’m gonna choke you out. I’m gonna knock you out. If you run from me and you run off the mat like you’ve been doing the whole camp, I’m gonna follow you on the carpet, and I’m gonna commence to beating your ass. We got that clear? He said yeah, we sparred, and he left the next day.”

The timing of Woodley’s remarks, coming just after Covington’s loss, drew sharp criticism. MMA personality MMA Guru, on his X handle, wrote:
“Choosing to try and get across stories like this about someone while public perception of them is at an all time low is such a bitch move. Covington dominated you, broke your rib with a kick in round 2 btw & was desperate to fight you for the longest time while on the come up.”

Jon Jones reacts to Colby Covington’s loss at UFC Tampa
Jon Jones was quick to mock Colby Covington after the latter's defeat at UFC Tampa, where Joaquin Buckley dominated him before a doctor stoppage in the third round. The loss marked Covington’s second loss on the bounce after a year-long hiatus following his defeat to Leon Edwards at UFC 296 in 2023.
Covington’s pre-fight antics included reigniting his feud with Jones, a rivalry that traces back to their college days as roommates.
Following the loss, 'Bones' wrote:
"I know I shouldn’t but it’s just so much fun. It’s amusing watching someone you know hate you fail repeatedly."
