The bout was originally at welterweight but was moved to middleweight as Gastelum couldn't meet the 170-pound wight limit. It was also a must-win situation for both warriors as they were coming off losses.
The first round was tightly contested as both warriors kept the fight standing, throwing crisp combinations. Gastelum was largely head-hunting, while Rodriguez had varied attacks. Gastelum slightly edged Rodriguez out by putting him on the backpedal for most of the round, earning him a close 10-9.
The second round was also closely contested, with a slight edge for Gastelum, thanks to his wrestling, putting 'D-Rod' on the mat a few times.
The third round saw the Ultimate Fighter winner up the intensity, while Rodriguez looked visibly labored. After securing a strong takedown and staying on top for most of the final frame, Gastelum earned the unanimous decision win.
Kelvin Gastelum improved to 19-9-1, while Daniel Rodriguez fell to 17-5.
