Holland fought Chimaev in a short-notice fight at UFC 279 in September 2022. 'Trailblazer' was originally scheduled to fight Daniel Rodriguez in the welterweight division. However, due to a series of events in the fight week, he ended up fighting Chimaev at 180-pound catchweight.
'Borz' demonstrated his dominant grappling ability, outclassing Holland to secure a first-round submission victory by D'Arce choke.
When Kevin Holland announced retirement after losing to Khamzat Chimaev
Social media reactios suggested that Kevin Holland's defeat to Khamzat Chimaev sparked doubts about his ability to compete against the top grapplers of the welterweight and middleweight divisions.
In a surprising turn of events, Holland announced his retirement during an appearance on the Results Roofing podcast just a few days after the fight:
“I’m retired from fighting. I had a good fight, good payday, I had a good run. I see some of the people online [saying] ‘obviously he realizes he’ll never get the belt’ and my little psychedelic trip, that means I was wrong. I can’t be wrong on a psychedelic trip. I’ve lost coming out to Young Boy. That was my last hope, never losing coming out to Young Boy. Times are rough for your boy."

Speaking further, Holland jokingly said about Chimaev:
“It was not bad. I love that guy. He put me in a very good spot in my life. We love that guy. I’m actually thinking about getting a poster of that guy hung up in my restroom.” [7:45]
Fans were skeptical about Holland's retirement announcement, and as many had anticipated, the 32-year-old eventually returned to competition. His last fight ended in a TKO (doctor's stoppage) loss against Roman Dolidze.
Holland is expected to face former two-division ONE champion Reinier de Ridder at UFC 311 on Jan. 18, 2025.
