At UFC 307 last weekend, UFC light-heavyweight champion Alex Pereira proved once again that you should never stand and bang with him inside the Octagon. This lesson was learned the hard way by Khalil Rountree Jr as he succumbed to the defending champion's heavy strikes in the fourth round.
Perhaps the only man who has the tools to stand and trade with 'Poatan' in the cage is interim UFC heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall. This champion vs. champion bout, if ever it gets booked, would easily be the biggest clash of the year, bar none.
Pereira himself teased the fight in a photo he shared on his Instagram. It showed Aspinal intensely looking at him from the crowd as 'Poatan' was about to enter the octagon:
"This is one my favorite moments before a fight"

Tom Aspinall plans to "rugby tackle" Alex Pereira early if ever they face each other
As early as June this year, Tom Aspinall already made it known how he plans to solve the 'Poatan' problem inside the octagon. It seems we may have spoken too soon with our "stand-and-bang" theory. Ahead of his successful interim UFC heavyweight title defense against Curtis Blaydes at UFC 304, Aspinall said in an interview with Jamal Niaz:
"The bell would go, and I'd f**king run across full blast and rugby tackle him. First 10 seconds of the fight [to execute takedowns]. Well, I got one very reliable takedown, if you watch my fight with [Andrei] Arlovski I did the spear... Full blast mate, f**king 40-yard dash straight across, head in the middle in a full-on spear."

Historically, Aspinall has shown more tools to win a fight compared to Alex Pereira who dispatched nearly all of his opponents solely via strikes. It would be interesting to see how the kickboxing-heavy Pereira would deal with the wrestling attacks of a beefier Aspinall.
