Islam Makhachev, like his fellow teammates, has a reputation for his unmatched wrestling skills. The Dagestani fighters in major MMA promotions are known for their conditioning and hard work and have offered multiple fighters to train with them in the past. Recently a surging UFC flyweight contender has indicated a desire to visit Dagestan to train with the MMA elites.
In a post on Instagram, ESPN MMA quoted Makhachev inviting Demetrious Johnson to Dagestan for training. Their post's caption read:
"Islam Makhachev told Demetrious Johnson to bring his whole family to Dagestan but told DC to send his son and forget 😂".

The reigning UFC lightweight champion also complained about Daniel Cormier who has been promising to visit them for the past ten years but hasn't been to Dagestan yet. The No. 3 ranked UFC flyweight, Amir Albazi jumped to the comment section and seemingly indicated his wish to train in Dagestan:
"I come."
Demetrious Johnson was recently seen training with Khabib Nurmagomedov and the 33-year-old champion. He is preparing to defend his lightweight title against Arman Tsarukyan at UFC 311 in his upcoming fight.
Islam Makhachev reflects on his "mistakes" against Dustin Poirier at UFC 302
Islam Makhachev defended his lightweight title against Dustin Poirier at UFC 302 in a high-stakes bout at UFC 302. In the closing moments of the showdown, he showcased his elite wrestling skills and put Poirier in a D'Arce choke leading to his submission.
However, days away from his upcoming title defense against Arman Tsarukyan, he admitted to making "mistakes" in the fight against Poirier. While exchanging his thoughts on the bout with Demetrious Johnson on his podcast MightyCast he reflected on the fight and said:
"He did good homework. He defended my wrestling. I made a lot of mistakes… He gave me a... But when I watch the highlights, I like this fight."
The fifth-round submission maneuver of Islam Makhachev at UFC 302 earned him a Performance of the Night Award besides his successful title defense. It was also conferred with the Submission of the Year 2024 in UFC Honors.
