Break-out fights in the UFC 280 main card
As his mentor and friend Khabib Nurmagomedov predicted, sambo maestro Islam Makhachev made light work of former champion Charles Oliveira to claim the vacant lightweight championship in the main event of UFC 280. Interestingly, the Dagestani secured a second-round submission over Oliveira, who many consider to be one of the best jiu-jitsu practitioners in MMA history.
Following the win, Makhachev was also upgraded to a five-star fighter in the EA Sports UFC 4 video game.
In the co-main event, bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling secured a second-round TKO victory over former two-time bantamweight titleholder T.J. Dillashaw to make his second successful title defense.
Dillashaw was reportedly suffering from a shoulder injury coming into the fight. To make matters worse, his shoulder dislocated in the very first round. Even though his corner popped the shoulder back into place in between rounds, he was finished by the champion in round two.
In yet another highly anticipated matchup, No.11-ranked bantamweight contender Sean O'Malley secured a hard-fought split-decision victory over former champion Petr Yan. The win caused a lot of controversy as many fighters, including former UFC two-division champion Henry Cejudo, opined that Yan was robbed of a win in the fight.
The Yan-O'Malley fight was also awarded the Fight of the Night.
