UFC 281: Is Frankie Edgar retiring in New York?

It's been widely reported that Frankie Edgar is expected to retire after his UFC 281 clash against Chris Gutierrez in New York. 'The Answer' is currently on a two-fight losing streak.

He suffered back-to-back defeats against Cory Sandhagen at UFC: Overeem Vs.Volkov, and Marlon Vera at UFC 268 in 2021. Edgar has only won once in his last five bouts, only beating Pedro Munhoz via split decision in August 2020. However, if the 41-year-old does retire at UFC 281, Edgar can look back on an amazing career.

'The Answer' is a former UFC lightweight champion and has competed 29 times under the UFC's banner, including challenging for the featherweight belt. During these organizational outings, the 41-year-old has won 18 times and has lost 10 times in the UFC. Frankie Edgar's only draw in the UFC came against Gray Maynard at UFC 125: Resolution.

While speaking to MMAFighting, Frankie Edgar explained that he clearly can't fight forever but feels he has a couple of years left in him. However, family ties and his age are seemingly the reasons behind his decision:

"I know I can’t fight forever. I could definitely string it on a couple more years probably but I know I’ll never move on to what’s the next chapter in my life. I think now I’m being selfish when I’m still trying to chase this and I’ve got a family and kids that want to have goals of their own."

When did Frankie Edgar last win a UFC bout via stoppage?

As mentioned, Frankie Edgar has struggled to compete at the highest level in the UFC. His last win via stoppage came against Yair Rodriguez at UFC 211: Miocic vs. Dos Santos 2 in 2017. The bout ended via a doctor stoppage in the second round.

Edgar's most recent victory via stoppage that didn't involve the doctor was back in 2015, stopping Chad Mendes in the very first round. All of the 41-year-old's wins after the Rodriguez bout have come via decision, with the American getting the better of Cub Swanson and Pedro Munhoz.

Edgar is likely to end his professional MMA career at UFC 281 this weekend. The American is currently on a two-fight losing streak in the organization and suggesting that he is ready to leave the sport.
