A UFC Hall of Famer recently opened up about his professional MMA career and explained how his mentality helped prepare him for life after fighting. Being a contender and champion takes a mental toll on fighters as they are building their legacy in the sport.

Since stepping away from competition in 2016, Ken Shamrock has since devoted his time and energy to other ventures. 'The World's Most Dangerous Man' returned to TNA Wrestling for one more run as a pro wrestler and transitioned into the promoter role by starting up his own bare-knuckle boxing promotion called Tru BK (formerly Valor BK).

During his appearance on INSIGHT with Chris Van Vliet, the MMA legend shed light on the sacrifices required in order to become among the top fighters in the world. Shamrock mentioned that having that mindset for so many years helped prepare him for his post-career interests including with his bare-knuckle promotion:

"Just being a contender, there is so much that you have to sacrifice to get there. It's a long journey, it's hard, it's grueling and you put yourself through things that 95% of the people won't do. And so if you could take that same commitment and desire that you did to become a world champion or a contender and then figure out how it fits into the business world, you'll never fail."

UFC Hall of Famer Ken Shamrock clarifies why some of his fights fell through during his career

In addition to opening up about his mindset, Ken Shamrock also clarified and set the record straight on why some of his fights fell through during his career.

During the aforementioned appearance, the UFC Hall of Famer noted that he had agents negotiate on his behalf and mentioned that some of his fights, including one against former WWE superstar Bobby Lashley, fell through due to negotiations rather than willingness to fight:

"I never negotiated my fights as I became bigger and bigger, I got agents to do that. So when they fell through, it had nothing to do with me. It's the negotiations...A couple of these different things that people want to say, 'Oh, you just didn't want to fight him.' I promise you this, if you're a fighter and you're at that 1% level, that will never happen to anyone, not wanting to fight somebody. That's not in our DNA." [45:43 - 46:13]
