Quinton 'Rampage' Jackson described the difference between American and Japanese fans and his experience competing in American promotions like UFC and Bellator compared to Japanese-based promotion Pride FC. The MMA legend was a beloved popular fighter in both promotions, but highlighted a major difference with how both respective fan bases consume the sport.
'Rampage' competed in Pride FC from 2001-2006 and later the UFC from 2007-2013 followed by a one-off in the octagon in-between his Bellator tenure. During his tenures, Jackson experienced a great deal of success and became aware of how fans gravitated toward him in America and Japan.
During his special UFC 310 recap episode of his JAXXON PODCAST, the former light heavyweight champion told T.J. Dillashaw that he thrived off the fans' energy. Jackson mentioned that the atmosphere affected his performance and highlighted that Japanese fans were much more quiet during the actual fights, while the American fans were vocal throughout:
"I feed off people's energy. The American fans, their energy is different from the Japanese fans...They're quiet [in Japan] but when you're walking out, they're not quiet. When you're walking out into the arena, they're not quiet. That'd be weird, right? They're cheering for you and stuff and everything but the UFC fans...they're cheering and some people are booing and some people saying sh*t...Energy is real. It affected me."
