Usman Nurmagomedov, the undefeated Bellator lightweight champion, has been criticized for his comments regarding recent challenger Paul Hughes following their fight in the PFL. Nurmagomedov just successfully defended the title against Hughes in a close decision.

The championship bout, at the Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai, saw Nurmagomedov narrowly retain his title through a majority decision, with judges scoring the fight 48-46, 48-46, and 47-47 in his favor.

This fight was described by many, including UFC fighter Dan Hardy, as one of the best PFL bouts to date. Both players showed off their exceptional skills and determination that justified the claim.

When discussing Hughes' future, Nurmagomedov seemed to suggest that 'Big News' would need to gain additional experience before receiving another title shot. During one of the post-fight interviews, he mentioned:

"He has to win like three, four fights. He had only two fights and they gave him a title shot."

In response, former UFC fighter Josh Thomson, during his podcast Weighing In, offered a counter perspective to Nurmagomedov’s remarks. Thomson did not mince words in expressing his disagreement:

"I didn't like hearing Usman Nurmagomedov in the back saying, 'No, he's got to fight three or four more other fighters.' That was weird; there's not even three or four more other fighters in your guys' weight class."

Thomson's critique highlighted the perceived lack of depth in the division, suggesting that Hughes has already proven himself as the top contender.
