Usman Nurmagomedov and Paul Hughes kicked of the PFL's 2025 season in epic fashion as they went to war in the main event of PFL Dubai on Jan. 25. The Dagestani fighter successfully defended his Bellator MMA lightweight world title, albeit with some difficulty.
Ahead of the fight, Nurmagomedov was adamant that his Irish opponent was levels below him as a fighter. So much so that the 26-year old stated that beating Hughes was not enough, he needed to stop 'Big News' to be satisfied.
But the fight unfolded in an immensely competitive fashion as the title challenger proved himself to be a worthy adversary for Nurmagomedov. Following the result, the lightweight champion appeared in front of the media in his locker room and shared a candid reflection on his mindset going into the fight.

"It was a great fight for me, I went to the deep ocean. I know what I can do for next time and I underestimated this guy a little bit. It was a mistake, but whatever, Alhamdulillah no matter what. Of course I am human like everyone, like every sportsman. I have some weaknesses, I have strong [points] and I'm not someone who cannot lose. But in my mind I am never going to lose."

Usman Nurmagomedov tells Paul Hughes to string some wins together before rematch
PFL Dubai saw a thrilling lightweight title clash between Usman Nurmagomedov and Paul Hughes. The build-up to their bout was filled with comparisons to Khabib Nurmagomedov's infamous rivalry with Conor McGregor, as the Dagestan vs. Ireland rivalry was well and truly reignited.
Nurmagomedov was able to maintain his undefeated professional record and defend his lightweight throne, but the fight was much more competitive than many, including the Dagestani, expected.
The nature of the bout led to calls for an immediate rematch between the pair, this time in Hughes' home territory of Ireland. Nurmagomedov was interviewed by talkSPORT MMA following the result, and asked about an immediate rematch with 'Big News'.
He said this:
"I don't like the rematch. I need some new names and for Paul, I wish the best for him but he needs to get some fights, a couple [of fights]. He only has two fights in the division and they gave him a gift. Now, the second time, he has to deserve [the title shot]. Three, four, five winning streak and then we will see."
