Bellator lightweight champion Usman Nurmagomedov has his sights set on a potential superfight with a former featherweight champion, as his next title defense. However, Nurmagomedov must first secure a victory over Alexandr Shabliy in the headlining bout of Bellator Champions Series: San Diego.
If Nurmagomedov successfully defends his title, he believes that A.J. McKee, who is currently scheduled to face Paul Hughes at PFL: Battle of the Giants, would be a worthy contender for the lightweight belt. Nurmagomedov praised McKee's toughness and skill and expressed his desire to test himself against the former champion.
Speaking to MMA Junkie, he said:
“I think if he’s healthy and he’s ready, I think it’s going to be A.J. McKee...He’s a tough guy. I think he’s going to win [against Hughes], and then next fight, I think it’s going to be A.J. McKee vs. Usman Nurmagomedov.”

Usman Nurmagomedov opens up on drug suspension
Usman Nurmagomedov is finally set to return after a lengthy hiatus. The fighter had previously pulled out of a scheduled fight against Alexandr Shabliy due to an undisclosed injury. But he has now revealed that the real reason for his withdrawal was an illness that he suspects may have been COVID-19.
Nurmagomedov also addressed the controversy surrounding a drug test failure that led to a delay in his return. He clarified that the substance he tested positive for was a medication and not a performance-enhancing drug.
Appearing in the same interview, he said:
“We have a deal with California Commission, and I cannot tell to media or someone. But it was medication. If it were a steroid, they have to say, ‘This was a steroid.’ And they have to give me more time for suspension. They have to give me like one year, two year, and we have example from other guys. It was medication, and this was like nothing. Everything is good now.”
