#1. Interim WBC super welterweight title: Vergil Ortiz Jr. vs. Serhii Bohachuk
Saturday's main event is, in the eyes of many, a guaranteed firefight, such that many expect Vergil Ortiz Jr. vs. Serhii Bohachuk to end with a stoppage, as both men are heavy-handed boxers. Ortiz Jr., for example, is undefeated at 21-0, with all 21 of his wins coming by way of either knockout or TKO.
Meanwhile, Bohachuk, who defends his interim WBC super welterweight strap, is 24-1, having stopped 23 of his 24 beaten foes. It is a risky bout for the American, who is moving up in weight to face a larger foe with dynamite in his hands, especially one who demolished Brian Mendoza in his last outing.
Besides mere punching power, the dynamics of the fight render it interesting. Ortiz has a crisp jab that should find a home on Bohachuk's chin, who marches forward to apply relentless pressure at the expense of defense. The Ukranian's jab is also defensively irresponsible.
Whenever Bohachuk throws his jab, he fails to retract it to his chin in time, leaving him open to counters, which isn't ideal for a fighter whose chin isn't exactly made of granite. However, Ortiz will have to exercise caution come fight night for two key reasons.
First, he's been fairly inactive. While he has fought twice this year, he won both bouts in round one. Before that, he had last fought once in 2021. So he has two rounds in him for 2024, which brings his conditioning into questioning, especially against the body shots he is sure to face against Bohachuk.
Nevertheless, Ortiz has the tools to outbox his opponent en route to a potential fight with Tim Tszyu.
The Prediction: Vergil Ortiz Jr. via TKO
