During his UFC 310 media day interview, Vicente Luque shared his thoughts on the possibility of rescheduling his fight with Nick Diaz. Unfortunately, the welterweight mainstay is now checked out of the matchup, even in a hypothetical sense.
He now faces Themba Gorimbo, who took the fight on short-notice. Despite the fact that a bout with Diaz will draw the attention of the casual MMA fanbase and serve Luque better from a financial and promotional standpoint than most fights, it has become a gamble.
"When I was supposed to fight in August and it didn't happen, the UFC wanted this fight. It was a big fight and I said, 'Okay, let's do it, but I wanna fight this year.' And then I told Ali [Abdelaziz], I'll be ready for anybody. So that's the thing, because I knew maybe it's not gonna happen, so I'll stay ready for whoever steps up and great that Themba [Gorimbo] stepped up and now we get to fight."
Given Diaz's recent struggles as of late, the Brazilian knockout artist is ready to put that fight behind him and focus on the future, which he answered when asked about any lingering willingness to fight Diaz.

"At this point, I don't think it will happen again. Maybe, who knows? But I'm looking up division, I'm looking up, I'm looking to get past Themba. That's the first mission to be accomplished, and after that I'm looking up, so I think that the Nick fight is [in the] past."

Now, Luque is intent on fighting for his dream, which is to become the UFC welterweight champion. But at 33 years old, with a #14 ranking in the division and a 1-3 record in his last four fights, he has a long way to go.
Vicente Luque's fight with Nick Diaz has been scrapped before
The Vicente Luque vs. Nick Diaz fight was originally scheduled for UFC on ABC 7 in Abu Dhabi, Saudi Arabia. However, travel issues led to the postponement of the bout, which was eventually rescheduled for UFC 310. Unfortunately, that matchup was also scrapped. This time for unknown reasons.
However, footage of a shirtless Diaz trying to set grass alight on public property has left many wondering if his current mental state has played a role.
