Before Jonathan Haggerty embarks on his road to redemption, ONE Championship recently revisited a pivotal matchup from a few years ago that ignited his remarkable resurgence.
The British fan-favorite battled Japan’s Taiki Naito in the main event of ONE: Big Bang II, held at the closed-door Singapore Indoor Stadium in Dec. 2020, amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Entering the bout after suffering a third-round TKO loss to Rodtang Jitmuangnon 11 months earlier, ‘The General’ was determined to reassert his dominance — and his performance against Naito made that clear.
Haggerty showcased his full arsenal, employing a variety of feints, powerful leg kicks, and precise boxing combinations. In the opening round, a lightning-fast right hand dropped Naito.
Though the Japanese competitor managed to beat the count, the second round saw Haggerty land another emphatic blow, this time a looping right hook that floored Naito once more.
Despite Naito's efforts to rally in the third frame, Haggerty remained in control, cruising to the final bell. All three judges scored the bout in his favor, awarding him a unanimous decision victory.
That win marked the beginning of an impressive streak for Haggerty, who has since tallied four more victories and ascended to two-sport world champion status, claiming both the ONE bantamweight kickboxing and Muay Thai world titles.
Jonathan Haggerty eyes to place himself back on the winning track
Now, Jonathan Haggerty faces a familiar challenge as he prepares to defend his bantamweight kickboxing crown against Chinese standout Wei Rui in the main event of ONE 171, emanating live from the Lusail Sports Arena in Qatar on Feb. 20.
The Englishman comes into the duel looking to rebound from a stunning 49-second knockout loss to Superlek Kiatmoo9 at ONE 168 this past September, which cost him the ONE bantamweight Muay Thai world championship.
Eager to return to winning form, Haggerty hopes to ignite another streak that could elevate his legacy to even greater heights.
