Producing the comeback of the year, Lee was beaten from pillar to post in the opening round, but overcame adversity and refused to stop putting the pressure on his opponent before securing a stoppage in the fourth round.
Alongside ‘The Warrior’ are Tawanchai P.K.Saenchai and Smilla Sundell, who both claimed world titles for the first time in 2022.
At ONE 161 in September, Tawanchai dethroned the previously long-reigning featherweight Muay Thai world champion Petchmorakot Petchyindee. With the best performance of his career, the 23-year old Thai fighter capped off an incredible year with a world title win, earning him the Muay Thai Fighter of the Year award.
At ONE 156 in April, Smilla Sundell made history with her win over Jackie Buntan. At the age of 17, she became the youngest person to ever win a world title, defeating her American opponent with a fantastic display of her skills.
Christian Lee predicts outcome if he fights fellow world champions Islam Makhachev, Raush Manfio, Patricky Pitbull
In 2022, Christian Lee became a double champion in the space of three months. With two incredible victories, ‘The Warrior’ ended the year holding both the lightweight and welterweight world titles.
At just 24 years old, ‘The Warrior’ has earned 17 career wins with an incredible 16 by way of finish. With his performance against Kiamrian Abbasov at ONE on Prime Video 4, Lee lived up to his nickname and won the fight thanks to his heart and toughness instead of his skills.
During an appearance on the MMA Junkie Podcast, Christian Lee discussed hypothetical meetings with some other pound-for-pound greats, including Khabib Nurmagomedov’s champion protege, Islam Makhachev. Other lightweight stars discussed in the conversation were Raush Manfio and Patricky Pitbull:
“Yeah, I think if you were to put the four of us in one tournament, I think for sure it would be me and Islam in the finals. I have a lot of respect for Islam. He had a great performance in capturing the lightweight title. But I believe that I would win that fight, for sure.”
Though it remains unclear whether he will stay at welterweight for his next fight or return to lightweight, 2023 is sure to be another huge 12 months in the career of ‘The Warrior’.
