Demetrious Johnson’s foundation in wrestling has helped him stay on top in MMA

Capturing the ONE Flyweight World Grand Prix championship in 2019, 'DJ' moved on to become the promotion’s undisputed flyweight king in August, defeating division rival Adriano Moraes with a knockout of the year candidate.

Speaking with longtime MMA commentator Joe Rogan on his podcast, Demetrious Johnson discussed his long run at the top and believes wrestling in middle school is where it all began:

“It’s probably my upbringing in martial arts, right? I was talking to people the other day and I told them I started when I was 18 in martial arts. If you count, some people don’t count wrestling as a martial art, I do. So I started in middle school, then I got to high school, I didn’t go to wrestle, I jumped straight to mixed martial arts.”

Demetrious Johnson continued, saying:

“Now when I get to my fights or when I do things, I’m able to go back to my beginning. I’ve faced this before and I’m able to just keep getting better. My foundation is so solid that it’s what’s been able to keep me on top for so long.”
