Before Fabricio Andrade runs it back with John Lineker this week, relive “Wonder Boy’s” fantastic promotional debut in ONE Championship.
In July 2020, the Brazilian powerhouse faced seasoned MMA fighter ‘Tyson’ Mark Abelardo at ONE: No Surrender in Thailand. Despite coming in as a rookie, Andrade nevertheless boasted an intimidating kickboxing record of 28-1, whereas Abelardo who had 19 wins under his belt, was looking to bounce back from a disappointing loss against Troy Worthen at ONE: King of the Jungle.
The match started out strong with Andrade finding his range early with the first body kick of the night. He kept Abelardo backpedaling against the ring as he used his long reach to punish his rival with straight jabs and kicks. He continued to do well defensively, as ‘Tyson’ tried to close the gap with a single-leg takedown through-out the match.
Eventually, Aberlardo scored the takedown in the second round, but Andrade got the better of that exchange. Scrambling to take the back, Andrade quickly locked in the rear-naked choke to sleep the Filipino-Kiwi warrior within seconds.
