John Lineker on fighting in his childhood
Being bullied at school motivated 'Hands of Stone' John Lineker to be an effective fighter out of necessity. In an interview with ONE Championship, the Brazilian MMA veteran explained:
“I was not popular. At the time, we did not understand bullying. We simply cursed each other and fought, exchanging punches. But at the time, as I was short, the tall ones always wanted to pat me on the head and called me a dwarf.”
'Hands of Stone' added that matters at home pushed him even further. He continued:
“The thing was already heating up, and we solved it right there. My father always said, ‘If you fight in the street and get beaten up, you’ll get beat up at home, too.’ So, I went with everything. I’d rather hit than get beaten twice.”
Seeing Brazilian boxing world champion Acelino ‘Popó’ Freitas and PRIDE world champion Wanderlei Silva pushed the young Brazilian Lineker into the combat sports world.
Having made his professional MMA debut in 2008, 'Hands of Stone' is looking to capture the vacant ONE bantamweight world title on February 24, in what will be the most important moment of his career.
