In a little over two months, Jonathan Haggerty is scheduled to return to the ONE circle to challenge divisional king Nong-O Hama, for the ONE bantamweight Muay Thai belt on April 21 at ONE Fight Night 9 on Prime Video.
Haggerty, who is by far one of the most dynamic and exciting strikers to come out of the UK, has a difficult task ahead of him. The defending world champion, Nong-O Hama, has had seven successful world title defenses thus far and has compiled a professional record of 10-0 under the ONE banner.
However, ‘The General’ is no pushover. A former ONE flyweight Muay Thai world champion in his own right, Haggerty is a battle-tested warrior with an insatiable hunger to defy the odds.
Jonathan Haggerty says he loves the power he has at the bantamweight level
Jonathan Haggerty is enjoying the process of fighting at the 145-pound bantamweight level.
As he said on record before, he’s not too worried about getting bigger anymore and has more freedom to eat what he wants. Since moving up a weight class, Haggerty has increased his diet to include not only fish but also streaks and healthy carbs. As a result, he feels stronger and more powerful.
‘The General’ recently put that power to the test in his first outing in the new division against Russia’s Vladimir Kuzmin at ONE on Prime Video 4 last November.
He gave fans a thrilling back-and-forth fight from start to finish, which he ultimately won by majority decision. At the post-fight interview, Haggerty recalled the power he feels fighting at a heavier weight class.
He told SCMP MMA:
“I wouldn’t say too much the punches, I’d say like the kicks. Sort of the effectiveness of the kicks. Just more aggression, it felt more powerful me kicking him, it just felt a lot bigger but I loved it man.”
