Jonathan Haggerty reveals he chose Muay Thai over MMA, for now

'The General' has been competing at the pro Muay Thai level for nearly a decade, but he recently contemplated about transitioning to MMA.

Haggerty told The MMA Superfan:

“The plan was, I sat down with my team, and there were two options. We can go bantamweight Muay Thai or we can go fully into MMA. I chose bantamweight Muay Thai because I feel like I want to get the belt again at Muay Thai. I’m destined to get that. I want that belt, especially the new belt. We chose Muay Thai.”

The 25-year-old became ONE's flyweight Muay Thai champ in just his second promotional appearance, beating Sam-A Gaiyanghadao.

Consecutive losses to Rodtang set Haggerty back a bit, but he has since rattled off three straight victories inside the circle. He defeated Taiki Naito and Mongkolpetch Petchyindee before moving up to bantamweight, where he faced Vladimir Kuzmin.

He has a chance to acquire the bantamweight Muay Thai strap in his next outing, but it won't be easy against Nong-O Hama, who is looking to make his eighth successful title defense.

Be sure to tune in to ONE Fight Night 9 on April 22 to watch Jonathan Haggerty take on Nong-O for the bantamweight Muay Thai title, live from the Lumpinee Boxing Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.

All the action will be broadcast live and for free on Prime Video for all Amazon subscribers across North America.
