While the Scottish warrior entered the promotion with a strong reputation, he still had to prove himself through the highly competitive ONE Friday Fights series.
Carrillo made an emphatic debut in April 2023, overpowering Furkan Karabag to author a third-round stoppage.
Just two months later, he earned his place on the main roster and a $100,000 contract with a stunning second-round TKO victory over Muangthai PK Saenchai.
Once officially part of ONE’s elite ranks, Carrillo was thrown straight into deep waters, facing former ONE bantamweight Muay Thai world champion Nong-O Hama.
Against all odds, Carrillo shocked the combat sports world by knocking out the Thai legend in the first round of their December 2023 showdown.
The Deachkalek Muay Thai Academy representative’s ascent continued this past July, where he delivered a second-round demolition of Saemapetch Fairtex to position himself as the frontrunner for a world title shot in the weight class.
Nico Carrillo gets his wish to vie for gold at ONE 170
Now, Nico Carrillo is set to fulfill his dream of competing for a world title.
On January 24, 2025, at ONE 170, he will challenge divisional king and two-sport titleholder Superlek Kiatmoo9 for the ONE bantamweight Muay Thai world championship.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Carrillo expressed confidence in his preparation, hinting at key elements in his game that could pose problems for the defending champion:
"[My punching] is far superior. His kicking might be faster, but it definitely won’t be stronger. But, I’m going to keep him at length."
