ONE welterweight submission grappling world champion Tye Ruotolo is no stranger to all-out scraps and he displayed a new side to his game at ONE Fight Night 23 last Friday, July 5.
Ruotolo had the task of welcoming accomplished BJJ star Jozef Chen to the promotion in a catchweight (186 pounds) submission grappling contest and fans were raring to see how the 19-year-old would fare inside the Circle.
Chen had no issues hand-fighting with Ruotolo to start the contest, but it was the American star who made things even more interesting in the early going with his wrestling skills that sent the B-Team product crashing to the mat.

Though Chen was able to get back up to his feet fairly quickly and continued mixing it up with the ONE world champ, the 21-year-old Ruotolo brought him back to the mat with a big double-leg takedown.
Ruotolo would take full control of the bout from there, as he eventually secured the unanimous decision victory to stay unbeaten in his ONE career.
Tye Ruotolo unhappy with his performance against Jozef Chen
Ruotolo worked hard to crack Chen's defense for a submission finish, but was unable to do so and he addressed his disappointment in the post-event press conference.
Tye Ruotolo told the media:
"For sure, I could have performed a lot better. It's not a performance that I'm very proud of. I didn't have the best camp and I didn't feel the best way going through the fight, unless it's the fact that I won even on my worst day. It makes me happy."
