Chandler was originally scheduled to make his comeback to the octagon after a two-year hiatus against Conor McGregor at UFC 303. However, the Irishman withdrew from the bout due to a toe injury, and he then faced Oliveira at UFC 309.

Michael Chandler reveals emotional impact of Conor McGregor's withdrawal from UFC 303 bout

Michael Chandler and Conor McGregor's rivalry originates from 'The Ultimate Fighter' Season 31, where both fighters served as opposing coaches. Since then, Chandler had been eagerly awaiting the chance to face McGregor in the octagon, but just as the fight was about to materialize, McGregor pulled out, prolonging Chandler’s wait even further.

In his appearance on Bo Nickal's YouTube channel, ‘Iron’ shared how the news impacted him, saying:

"I waited long enough. I waited the right amount of time, having the security and the reassurances behind the scenes that nobody knew about to actually get the fight booked. I’m not going to say it didn’t hit me hard, because it did, especially with the waiting leading up to it. But you just have to roll with it. If something bad happens and a good thing comes from it… That’s been proven in my life countless times.”
