Galal Yafai continued his meteoric rise in professional boxing with a sixth-round TKO victory over Sunny Edwards on Saturday. At Birmingham's BP Pulse LIVE arena, Yafai won the WBC interim flyweight title, bringing him closer to a world championship shot.

This is Yafai's ninth professional win. For Edwards, the fight resulted not only in defeat but also in controversy. In a corner camera clip shared by journalist Ariel Helwani, Edwards was heard confessing to his team:

“Can I be real with you? I don’t want to be here.”

“What a little b. A young ‘man’ in a gifted place and he lacks basic emotional control.”

Another criticized:

“Why waste the fans’ time and money? Embarrassing.”

Sunny Edwards reveals reason behind retirement, praises opponent

Sunny Edwards announced his retirement following a sixth-round stoppage loss to Galal Yafai at the Resorts World Arena in Birmingham, England. Post-fight, Edwards admitted his mindset had shifted ahead of the bout:

“Galal started really fast, we knew he would, but if I’m perfectly, perfectly honest, win, lose or draw, my team know this, I was retiring tonight. I don’t have the same energy that I had for the sport, for the process."

Later, praising his opponent, Edwards added:

“[Yafai will go] all the way. He’s an Olympic gold medallist, and in his ninth fight he just beat the number one in the division. I remember what that was like, three or four years ago. I’m sure he’s gonna get a lot of confidence, and a lot of motivation from this. Hopefully he goes on and dethrones Teraji and looks good doing it.”[H/t: Boxing Scene]
