Born in Brooklyn, New York, the aptly nicknamed 'The Chosen One' started boxing when he was just seven. He was inspired to pick up his gloves by watching former boxer Félix Trinidad. He then made a point of getting as much experience as possible before going pro, eventually gathering a monumental 162-17 amateur record.
The 27-year-old then opted to turn professional in 2016, aged 19. He has since continued his fine run from the amateur scene, most recently extending his undefeated pro record (22-0) with a TKO win over Padraid McCrory back in February. Of his 22 wins, 17 have come via knockout, with the five decisions all coming in his last six outings.
Edgar Berlanga discusses fight plan for when he faces Canelo Alvarez
Edgar Berlanga believes he's got the tools and the gameplan to cause one of the biggest upsets in boxing when he faces Canelo Alvarez later this month.
Ahead of his bout against 'Canelo', Berlanga spoke to 'Large' from Barstool Boxing, where he discussed his career so far and plans heading into the fight. According to 'The Chosen One', he and his team have already identified what they believe will be his greatest weapon against Alvarez, and have devised a gameplan to execute it. He said:
"You can't go in there [against Alvarez] and try to swing for the fences and think I'm gonna land on him. His IQ is crazy and he's got great defense. At that level it's about setting it up and that's what we've been working on. The mental and staying disciplined in that ring. Using the jab, that's gonna be our bread winner, the jab. To land a big punch, you've gotta set it up."
