Lee was attempting to make history by becoming the fifth four-time national wrestling champion, and had won his previous 58 matches. The devastation that the upset caused to Lee's mother was captured by cameras at the arena.
In an interview with Nick Bounocore following Matt Ramos' victory, he stated that he knew he could beat Spencer Lee:
"It's unreal, it hasn't really hit me. But I think manifesting it, speaking it into the air, I mean I had an interview earlier and I was saying that I'm ready for Spencer. And a lot of people were like, 'What makes you think you can beat him?' I'd say that I work really hard and trust what I believe in... I don't mean to be cocky, but if I can't get it out into the world, I don't believe it'll happen."
