Back in 2016, Petr Yan suffered his first professional MMA defeat when taking on Magomed Magomedov at Absolute Championship Berkut 32: The Battle of Lions in Moscow, Russia.

'No Mercy' lost via split decision, which prompted the two fighters to rematch in 2017. Magomedov put his ACB bantamweight championship on the line in the rematch at ACB 57: Payback. 'No Mercy' managed to get his revenge, beating 'Tiger' via unanimous decision after five rounds of fighting in Moscow.

Petr Yan went on to defend his belt against Matheus Mattos in what turned out to be his final outing under the Absolute Championship Berkut banner. Yan left ACB in 2017, and made his UFC debut the next year against Teruto Ishihara.

The first man to beat 'No Mercy', Magomed Magomedov, has proven to be a high-level fighter. The 30-year-old currently has a professional MMA record of 19-2, and is competing under the Bellator banner.

'Tiger' currently has a 3-1 record in Bellator, and is set to face Patchy Mix at Bellator 289 in December this year. Since losing to Yan, Magomed Magomedov has only lost once, with Raufeon Stots defeating the Russian via unanimous decision at Bellator 264 in 2021.

Who is Petr Yan fighting next and when is the bout taking place?

Petr Yan is set to face Sean O'Malley at UFC 280: Oliveira vs. Makhachev this weekend. Yan is currently the number one ranked Bantamweight in the UFC, with O'Malley currently sitting outside the top ten.

The contest is the third-last bout to take place on the pay-per-view card and is followed by a UFC bantamweight showdown between Aljamain Sterling and T.J. Dillashaw.

Both Yan and O'Malley are coming into this bout in dubious form, with 'No Mercy' losing to current UFC champion Sterling and O'Malley getting a no-contest result when facing Pedro Munhoz. The American was found to have illegally eye-poked Munhoz, causing the contest to be stopped in the second round.

UFC 280 will take place in Abu Dhabi later this week and is stacked from head to toe with interesting bouts. The headline bout is set to be Charles Oliveira vs. Islam Makhachev for the vacant UFC lightweight belt.
