Petr Yan has lost four times in professional MMA during his 20 career outings. Yan's first defeat came at the hands of Magomed Magomedov at Absolute Championship Berkut 32 in 2016 via split decision.
After suffering his first loss, the 29-year-old remained unbeaten until transitioning into the UFC. 'No Mercy' won seven times in the UFC before finally losing by disqualification to Aljamain Sterling due to a controversial illegal knee.
Due to the controversial nature of Sterling's victory at UFC 259, the two bantamweights rematched at UFC 273. The Jamaican shocked many MMA fans by once again beating the Russian, this time via split decision.

In his most recent outing, Yan was once again at the center of controversy. Many felt the Russian had done enough to beat Sean O'Malley after their three-round bout at UFC 280: Oliveira vs. Makhachev. However, the judges disagreed and scored the bout in favor of O'Malley via split decision.
Yan is now on a two-fight losing streak in the UFC. His last win in the organization came against Cory Sandhagen at UFC 267: Błachowicz vs. Teixeira in 2021.
Is Petr Yan leaving the UFC?
After the controversial UFC 280 result, Petr Yan has been rumored to be moving away from the organization. Daniel Cormier has stated that the Russian has been 'hurt' by the decision and may want to leave the UFC in the future.
'DC' also hinted that maybe the Russian feels the UFC doesn't have his back. This could play a role in the former champion looking for a move away from the organization:
"Petr Yan is so disappointed in this (UFC 280) decision. Petr Yan is so disappointed in the decision against 'Aljo'. That I’m hearing word this guy may want to look at something different down the line in terms of his career, because he just does not feel like maybe the organization doesn’t have his back."
The loss against O'Malley marked the first time in Yan's professional MMA career that he has lost two fights in a row, with both Aljamain Sterling and 'Sugar' getting the better of 'No Mercy' via split decision.
