Marcelo Garcia explained why he's not interested in using performance-enhancing drugs.
Over the past few years, ONE Championship has significantly benefited the growth of submission grappling, especially Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Despite rapid improvement, the sport continues to battle the widespread use of performance-enhancing drugs.
Several current and former ONE submission grapplers have been outspoken about the negative effects of PEDs. The promotion's newest signing, Marcelo Garcia, discussed the topic during an interview on 'The Ariel Helwani Show':
"Why am I going to gamble with my life? I feel like I have a beautiful life. I just don't want to risk that."

Marcelo Garcia to make promotional debut at ONE 170
On January 24, 2025, Marcelo Garcia is scheduled for his highly-anticipated ONE Championship debut. The 41-year-old's upcoming test is an openweight bout against fellow submission grappling legend Masakazu Imanari.
Imanari's primary success in ONE has come in MMA, where he holds a promotional record of 3-3. The Japanese fighter's last appearance in the sport was a 53-second submission against Kwon Won Il in February 2019.
Imanari has only made one submission grappling appearance under the ONE banner, a loss against Mikey Musumeci inside the distance.
ONE 170 goes down inside the Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand. The upcoming event can be seen live and for free by North American and Canadian viewers with an active Amazon Prime Video subscription.
In the main event, Tawanchai defends his featherweight Muay Thai world title against Jo Nattawut. The Thai strikers have already fought once in Muay Thai and another in kickboxing, with Tawanchai winning both.
As for the co-main event, Superlek looks to defend his bantamweight Muay Thai world title for the first time since dethroning Jonathan Haggerty. The Thai superstar has been tasked with taking out Nico Carrilo, who's undefeated in ONE (4-0).
