Nate Diaz departed from the UFC in September last year after defeating Tony Ferguson by submission. Diaz, who is still exploring the tides of free agency, has long been linked to a potential bout with YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul. A prospective shift to boxing appears to be Diaz's logical next step.
However, in an interview with Elie Seckbach, Diaz claimed that he wants to test himself against the best pound-for-pound boxers in the world currently, seemingly dismissing a clash against Paul. Additionally, Eddie Hearn, a renowned boxing promoter, disclosed that he had a conversation with the Stockton native regarding a potential bout with Canelo Alvarez.
Alvarez recently stated in an interview with InsideFighting that a boxing match against Diaz is not in his immediate future plans but is possible in the future:

Canelo Alvarez recently announced that his next bout will be in May in Jalisco, Mexico. This is a component of the larger commemoration of Jalisco's 200th anniversary as a state. Along with the governor of Jalisco, Enrique Alfaro, Canelo Alvarez posted a video to Instagram announcing a bout for May, although neither the opponent nor the date of the fight was disclosed.
Shaquille O’Neal weighs in on a potential clash between Nate Diaz and Canelo Alvarez
Nate Diaz is one of the most fearless competitors to step foot inside the octagon. Diaz has a strong grappling heritage, having earned a jiu-jitsu black belt from the legendary Cesar Gracie. He has honed his boxing talents to complement his mixed martial arts arsenal.
In doing so, he has gained credible in-ring experience by sparring with notable boxers like Omar Henry and Andre Ward. The Stockton native's rise to prominence as one of the sport's top stars has also presented him with chances beyond the UFC.
The former UFC superstar is determined to put his boxing talents to the test against the best boxers in the world, despite the reality that a bout with Jake Paul would guarantee him a massive payday and greater exposure.
Basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal was recently asked by InsideFighting to share his thoughts on how a potential fight between Nate Diaz and Canelo Alvarez would play out. O'Neal simply responded:
“He ain’t going to back down I know that [for sure]."
