The super welterweight division in professional boxing is a weight class above 66.7 kg and up to 69.9 kg (147–154 pounds). It is referred to as super welterweight in the WBA and WBC, junior middleweight in the IBF, or light middleweight.
The WBA became the first of the four major sanctioning organizations to approve a super welterweight championship match. Denny Moyer won the championship, which was also recognized by the WBC, by defeating Joey Giambra.
In 1984, the IBF crowned its first champion in the division, as Mark Medal defeated Earl Hargrove. After John David Jackson defeated Lupe Aquino in 1988, the WBO gave him their first iteration of the belt. The longest-reigning champion is Italian boxer Gianfranco Rosi, who has made 11 title defenses.
History of the Super Welterweight Class in Pro Boxing
One of the most significant pieces of American boxing legislation at the time, the New York Walker Law, is credited with helping this division take off in 1920. In 1962, the European Boxing Union and the Austrian Boxing Board of Control both recognized it.
Emile Griffith and Ted Wright engaged in the first official fight for the world's light-middleweight title on October 17, 1962, in Vienna, Austria. Griffith won the contest by a 15-round unanimous decision to claim the title of the first-ever world light middleweight champion.
