Ryan Hall is an American black belt holder under 2-time world champion Felipe Costa and instructor in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and a professional MMA fighter representing Tristar Gym. He is known for a number of competitive achievements, ranging from Mundial and ADCC victories to dozens of Grapplers Quest championships and is widely regarded as one of the best lightweight submission grapplers in the world.
He has released seven sets of best-selling instructional DVDs that have garnered wide acclaim for both their technical content and the clarity of Ryan’s teaching method. Additionally, Ryan is the author of “How To Master The Triangle Choke,” the definitive resource for training information regarding this signature technique of Jiu-Jitsu.

Ryan is an IBJJF Mundial (world), No-Gi Mundial, and European champion and medalist at the CBJJ Brazilian National (Brasiliero) championship, but is best known for his accomplishments on the world level of no-gi submission wrestling competition where he has faced and defeated some of the sport’s greatest champions. He has been invited three times to compete in the ultra-prestigious Abu Dhabi Submission Fighting World Championship where he is one of only a handful of non-Brazilian competitors in the history of the event to have come home with a medal.
Ryan began training Mixed Martial Arts at Tristar Gym in Montreal, Canada in 2012. He represented his new team for the first time in the cage at SLAMM-1 on November 30, 2012 in Montreal, Canada where he won by TKO in the first round. Ryan fought on the Challenge MMA 2 card on August 17, 2013. He submitted Maged Hammo at the Montreal, Quebec event.
In 2012, a viral video of Ryan was on the internet showing him using grappling techniques to defend himself against a larger, aggressive man while dining in a pizza parlor. In the video, Ryan demonstrates the use of a double leg takedown and the mount position. Later, he applies a chokehold to incapacitate the aggressor shortly before police arrive.
In addition to his competitive exploits, Ryan is a world-renowned instructor and coach. He instructs Jiu-Jitsu and Combative workshops for the United States military, helping to prepare the soldiers for any unarmed situation they may face while in the field.
