Sean Strickland made his professional debut on March 22, 2008, against Tyler Pottett at KOTC: Protege. Strickland defeated Pottett by a second-round submission and started his professional journey with a dominant win. He competed in multiple fight promotions before getting signed by the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).

Sean Strickland climbed through the ladders in UFC and at UFC 293 on September 10, 2023, he was called out by the then middleweight champion, Israel Adesanya for a title showdown at the pay-per-view event. He stunned most of the MMA fans in the fight when he secured a convincing unanimous decision victory over Adesanya and wrested the middleweight title from him. Sean Strickland dropped his middleweight title to Dricus du Plessis when the two squared off against each other at UFC 297 on January 20, 2023. The fight was closely contested and Du Plessis was declared a split decision winner in the end. However, the 33-year-old American fighter will get another shot at the title against du Plessis at UFC 312 on February 8, 2025.
