Sean Strickland will fight Paulo Costa at UFC 302.

Sean Strickland vs. Paulo Costa is an upcoming mixed martial arts matchup produced and organized by the Ultimate Fighting Championship. The middleweight bout is scheduled for the co-main event at UFC 302: Makhachev vs. Poirier on June 1, 2024, at the Prudential Center in Newark, United States.

The former UFC middleweight champion, Sean Strickland is coming off a split decision loss to Dicrus du Plessis in his last championship fight held at UFC 297 on January 20, 2024. After winning the title from Adesany in September 2023, Strickland could not hold on to the belt for his first defense matchup. However, the 33-year-old middleweight put on a show against the current champion, Dicrus du Plessis, and is currently ranked as the No.1 contender in the division.

Whereas, Paulo Costa is coming off a unanimous decision loss to the former middleweight champion, Robert Whittaker at UFC 298 on February 17, 2024. Even though Costa almost finished Whittaker in the first round, he lost it when it came to the decision of the judges. Moreover, it was Costa’s first fight in almost one and a half years of inactivity inside the Octagon and he is still ranked as the No.7 middleweight contender in the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

To sum up, both fighters are coming off a decision loss in their previous fights. For Strickland, it is his chance to defeat Paulo Costa and try another shot at the title by securing his No.1 spot in the rankings. Meanwhile, the 33-year-old Brazilian has his chance of defeating the former champion getting ranked as the No.1 contender in the middleweight rankings, and calling out for the champion for a title shot.
