“That's going to be very interesting” - Danielle Kelly is excited to grapple in a boxing ring for the very first time

BJJ wizard Danielle Kelly said she’s very excited to grapple inside a boxing ring instead of an MMA cage for her next submission grappling match.

The grappling sensation has a vast amount of experience competing on grappling mats, but never inside a boxing ring. En route to her next grappling bout at ONE Fight Night 7: Lineker vs. Andrade, the Philadelphia-native is both excited and enthusiastic about fighting inside the iconic Lumpinee Boxing Stadium in Bangkok.

Speaking at ONE Fight Night 7 pre-event interviews, Kelly said:

“I believe this match is going to be in a ring. It is in Thailand, it's a famous stadium, and they only use rings. I've actually never competed in a ring, so that's going to be very interesting. I think it'll be positive on my side, being a grappler. But with the cage, it was a bit different.”

In a previous interview, Kelly also said the same thing when she transitioned from the grappling mats to an MMA cage for the first time. Since then, Kelly has adapted well to her new environment. Although it was tricky at first, she studied the way other MMA grapplers used the cage to their advantage and practiced to do the same.

But a boxing ring is not so dissimilar to a jiu-jitsu mat since the majority of the bout will take place in the center of the ring so that the competitors don’t go out of bounds. For Danielle Kelly, this is very advantageous since she does her best work from the center.

For her opponent, MMA veteran and judo practitioner Ayaka Miura, it may prove to be a lot more difficult to defend an attack without the use of a cage to scramble free. So grappling fans will not be disappointed with this one. It’s definitely going to be an intriguing matchup to watch.
