Jung Chan-sung, also known as Chan Sung Jung and recognized as The Korean Zombie, is a South Korean mixed martial artist who competes in the UFC's Featherweight division. He has been a professional fighter since 2007 and has previously participated in organizations like WEC, Pancrase, World Victory Road, and DEEP. His nickname, The Korean Zombie, originates from his remarkable capacity to persistently advance and maintain an aggressive fighting style, even when subjected to significant strikes. He currently holds the #8 spot in the UFC featherweight rankings.
Jung Chan-sung was born in Pohang, South Korea in 1987. Due to his small size and rural upbringing, he endured constant bullying from peers, which often resulted in fights and confrontations. When he was 14 years old, however, his aunt intervened by taking him to a Hapkido gym nearby, where he trained in Kickboxing before attending education at Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology, where he also began studying Judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
At the age of 18, Jung enlisted in the South Korean Navy and commenced training in Taekwondo. In June 2007, he achieved victory in a Sambo tournament organized by the Korean Sambo Association. Later that year, in December, he secured the Lightweight division title in the Pancrase Korea Neo-Blood Tournament by defeating fellow South Koreans Yoo In Seok and Lee Hyung Geol. At the young age of 20, Jung ventured into mixed martial arts and quickly made his professional debut. In May 2008, he emerged as the victor in KOREA-FC's 8-man MMA tournament in the 65 kg division. Jung also gained recognition for his participation in the South Korean cable television show called Street Fighter in 2007. He competed in the 70 kg tournament and emerged as the winner. Notably, this tournament focused on stand-up fighting, similar to K-1 but without a ring.
