John Pedro is the father of MMA fighter Tyson Pedro. He was born and raised in California in the 1970's, amidst various warring groups. He described his early life as that of a fighter who knew how to defend himself by carrying a knife with him. However, he managed to stay quiet for the first two years after he came to Australia. He is a master at karate and Japanese Jiu-jitsu and has seven black belts.

He was initially a linebacker for Arizona State who came to Australia to respect his father’s dying wishes to be a Mormon. Nevertheless, in Australia, he met his future wife and, together with Tony Bonello, launched King of the Cage, an MMA promotion.

Experience with King of the Cage

John Pedro’s King of the Cage was an MMA promotion where there were very strict rules and the fighters could resort to any means in their fights. He even got into trouble with authorities who considered cage fighting to be illegal and threatened him with arrest, saying that MMA would never become popular in Australia. Despite this, he persevered and continued the promotion.

Training his son

When Tyson Pedro was born, there was an angry expression on his face. This made him and his wife agree that their son should be a professional fighter. They named him “Tyson” after “Iron” Mike Tyson. As he grew up, John Pedro started training his son. However, he was brutal towards Tyson Pedro. In the course of his son’s training, John knocked him unconscious, broke his son’s nose and on one occasion caused him to pick up his broken teeth from the ring floor. He even stabbed his son with his large knife when he was around 15 years old. According to John Pedro, all this helped in toughening Tyson Pedro up to be the MMA fighter that he is now.

Supporting his son

John Pedro has always supported his son in his MMA career. Even when he suffered from a nervous breakdown regarding the hype surrounding his UFC return,. He started drinking and disappeared for a few days. His wife, Rosie Hardiman, contacted John Pedro, who immediately left everything and came to help his son get back up. It eventually resulted in Tyson Pedro beating Ike Villenueva on his UFC return. Both father-son duos are very proud of each other and have managed to come this far in their journeys. John Pedro considers his son, Tyson Pedro, to be his legacy.
