Islam Makhachev created a lighthearted yet biting moment in MMA history when he questioned Dustin Poirier's Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) credentials. Ahead of his fight against Charles Oliveira at UFC 280 in 2022, Makhachev joined Daniel Cormier on the latter's YouTube channel to discuss Oliveira's dominance in the lightweight division.

Makhachev critiqued Oliveira’s previous opponents—Michael Chandler, Justin Gaethje, and Dustin Poirier—suggesting their lack of grappling skills cost them victories. Despite landing powerful strikes on Oliveira, none could capitalize on the ground due to hesitation against Oliveira's BJJ expertise.

Turning his focus to Poirier, Makhachev sarcastically questioned the validity of his BJJ black belt, referencing 'The Diamond's' 2021 loss to Oliveira via rear-naked choke:

"Black belt, who give him [Poirier]? We have to check that now. And we have to cancel, brother, many black belt because they make the jiu-jitsu look bad because a lot of guys have black belt but I don't know."

Islam Makhachev reacts to Colby Covington's "weight bully" comment

Islam Makhachev dismissed Colby Covington’s accusations of being a “weight bully,” criticizing the American’s tendency to stir controversy rather than prove himself in the octagon. Covington, a former interim welterweight champion, has repeatedly claimed that Makhachev and his teammate Khabib Nurmagomedov are significantly larger outside training camps, accusing them of exploiting their size advantage.

In a recent interview with Match TV, Makhachev addressed Covington’s comments, stating:

''First, let’s describe who Colby is. A man who can’t prove anything with his fights, but tries to be well known with his mouth. This is what he does.
