Before joining the UFC, he competed in the middleweight division of the Extreme Fighting Championship (EFC), where he held the titles of middleweight and welterweight weight classes. du Plessis has also fought in the Polish-based promotion Konfrontacja Sztuk Walki (KSW), where he was the Welterweight Champion.
