Yanez began his mixed martial arts (MMA) journey at just 15 years old and had his inaugural fight right after turning 17. Before entering the UFC, he worked as a Meter Reader for Deer Park City Hall. He honed his MMA skills under the guidance of the late Saul Soliz in Houston, Texas.

Yanez triumphed over Brady Huang in just 39 seconds during Dana White's Contender Series 28, which led to him earning a contract with the UFC. Yanez mentioned that during his last conversation with Soliz, he expressed his immense gratitude, stating that without Soliz's support, he wouldn't have achieved his current position. Yanez said that he always made sure to convey this appreciation on numerous occasions.

The fight was electric from the start, with Yanez landing significant shots, causing visible swelling on Font's face. However, Font countered with a swift right hand that dropped Yanez, and he finished the fight by pouring hammer fists, forcing the referee to interfere and save Yanez at 2:57 of Round 1. For Font, this win ended a two-fight losing streak, while Yanez suffered his first UFC loss, ending a nine-fight winning streak and marking his first career finish.
