Before joining The Ultimate Fighter, Alex Caceres started his fighting career in an underground backyard street fighting organization based in Miami. He primarily competed in promotions located in Florida, showcasing his skills and abilities in the local fight scene. One notable appearance was at "King of the Cage: Hurricane" in February 2009, where he faced Eric Kovarik, who had experienced a series of consecutive losses. In an impressive display, Caceres secured a submission victory with a rear naked choke, finishing the fight in less than two minutes.

Following his successful debut, Caceres continued his winning streak by submitting Joel Garcia with a triangle choke in May 2009. However, he then encountered a setback, experiencing two consecutive losses, both via armbar. These defeats brought his record to 4 wins and 2 losses at that point in his career.

In his final fight before joining The Ultimate Fighter, Caceres faced Jahmal McLennan. Determined to end his losing streak, Caceres showcased his skills and resilience by securing a TKO victory midway through the third round.
