Jack Catterall had received his solo loss so far at the hands of Josh Taylor on February 26, 2022. The two clashed for the IBF World Super Light, WBA World Super Light, WBC World Super Light and WBO World Super Light titles at OVO Hydro, Glasgow Scotland. The fight continued for 12 rounds and despite the fact that Catterall was the more consistent boxer and knocked Taylor down in the eighth round, Josh Taylor won the bout via split decision with a result of 112-113, 114-111, and 113-112.
This decision was controversial in nature, resulting in many former boxers speaking against it. Johnny Nelson, a former world cruiserweight champion stated that Josh Taylor did not win the fight and decisions like that resulted in the loss of fans.
