Jose Aldo is widely regarded as one of the best mixed martial artists to have ever competed. This former featherweight champion of both the UFC and WEC was born in Manaus, Brazil, on September 9, 1986. Aldo made his professional MMA debut in 2004 and quickly established himself as a force at 145 pounds. His rise began in WEC, where he won the featherweight title in 2009 after beating Mike Brown. When the WEC merged with UFC, Aldo became the UFC's first-ever featherweight champion.
With powerful leg kicks, sharp striking, and impeccable takedown defense at 92.6%, Aldo dominated his featherweight division for over six years, defending it multiple times. Some of his key victories include defeating Urijah Faber, Frankie Edgar, Chad Mendes, and Ricardo Lamas. His illustrious reign would finally come to a close in notorious fashion, as he lost his title to Conor McGregor via knockout in just 13 seconds at UFC 194 in 2015. He retired from MMA in September 2022 and was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame in 2023, becoming one of the exclusive few who are considered among the best champions ever in the sport. However, Aldo returned from retirement at UFC 301 against Jonathan Martinez, and his next fight is scheduled at UFC 307 against Mario Bautista.
